Going down the graduate route is something every individual should really consider seriously as it carries with it a lot of benefits. Refusal to do so doesn't necessarily mean that you make it in life as a Nigerian getting your dream job, but that you will be so limiting your options in life. Attaining a degree gives you an edge in life, increasing your potential to succeed. Life in the university offers a lot of development and allows for intellectual curiosity. In the process you get to develop certain skills such as presentation and problem solving and others.Higher Paying Jobs:
A graduate degree sets you apart and identifies you as an expert in whatever field you get to choose, giving you an advantage in an ever changing job landscape. Most of the reasonably paying jobs you will ever come across as a Nigerian all require graduates. Employers always specify and some go as far as not even attending to your application if you are not a graduate. Some times, it is not necessarily the field you are into but the fact that you have obtained a degree. For example, you can find a graduate of engineering working the accountant department of a bank. Increased Earning Potential:
As a graduate your earning potential is increased and this means that you get to earn more than someone who is not. In Nigeria your degree qualifies you for higher paying jobs- whether it requires any specialization or not. If a graduate and a non-graduate apply for the same job, who do you think is likely to get the job? The graduate of course! As a graduate, under normal circumstances you are more likely to earn more than a non graduate. Preference is always given to those that obtained a formal education, than those who informally learnt the work. It is expected that you must have developed skills that a non graduate does not have and that you will use this skills for the betterment of your job.More Respect:
In our society today, an individual who graduates with a degree is accorded a lot of respect and honor - both by their parents or people around them. People begin to see you as someone with great prospects in life. Your community sees you differently from others. You are taken more seriously than ever before. Your opinions are given high regard and you become more influential especially in regions where there are not much graduates, like in the villages. You can easily go for positions and will be given a higher consideration. We live in a country like Nigeria, where people are employed not necessarily because they know the job but because they carry a certificate that shows that they graduated from such or a related field. This is why getting a degree is one of the most important decisions that you will ever make in your life. In the end, this decision is sure to help you become a better individual. This is one endeavor that will definitely pay off.
