Since the use of ATM cards to carry out transaction became popular, there has been a subsequent rise in ATM crime. There have been cases of people who found out that their ATM cards were missing, and before they could complain to the bank official, they get credit alerts that money has been withdrawn from their accounts. There is need for everybody using ATM cards to maintain some security tips to prevent another person from having access to their account using their ATM card. Some basic ATM security tips to help you prevent breach in your bank account include;

- Do not ever give your card’s Person Identification Number (PIN) to anybody who has no reason to have access to your account, and if you feel that someone else has knowledge of your PIN, head over to the nearest ATM near you and change your PIN.
- Avoid using favourite numbers like your year of birth, 0000, or 1234 as you PIN. Anybody can easily guess it and have access to your account.
- In a situation where you realize that your ATM card is missing or has been stolen, call your account officer immediately and have him block you card.
This is why it is importance to know your account officer, because, it might be too late by the time you get to the bank to complain.
- Do not give out or show your ATM card to strangers because, they can clone your card and use it to have access to your account.
- Don't use the ATM when people are watching you. This is mostly common at congested ATMs. Avoid using them when they are people behind you because the major security for your card is your card PIN.
