You might not have heard the word ‘Pectin’ before, but might have been consuming it without knowing. Pectin is a carbohydrate that lacks calories, a reliable source of fiber which is an ingredient of a healthy diet. It is present in many fruits like apples, peaches, and strawberries and in vegetables like raw carrots, sweet potatoes, beans. Pectin will never be absorbed in the body but has a way of lowering cholesterol and sugar levels of the body.

One wonder pectin does is that it makes the stomach empty slowly, hence after its consumption, one feels satisfied for a longer period of time .It means that one is able to eat less, which leads to weight loss. Research has revealed that a small dose of pectin, like a single teaspoon, can make one feel satisfied.

Pectin can be found in the local grocery store, in powder form known as Sure-Jel and in liquid known as Certo. Pectin, derived from apples and grapefruit is ordinarily found amongst the baking supplies in the supermarket and in health food stores.

Those who are in support of the use of pectin in weight loss, recommend you add it to orange juice, water or soft drink and it should have no effect on the taste of your beverage. Since pectin is a known fiber, its intake should be increased gradually, starting with a teaspoon a day and then increase to three teaspoon daily. You can also add it to apple source, baked potatoes or broth.

Pectin is fiber and generally, fiber is a key element to successful weight loss. Physicians also believe one should consume between 25 to 35 grams of fiber daily, as it has other health advantage, like reducing cholesterol, diabetes management and in limiting heart damage. Getting source of fiber is easy and present in foods like peas, carrots, spinach, and cauliflower, and there are fiber-enriched breakfast cereals and breads .In many parts of the world, food rich in fiber is low in fat.

There are ways to increase your fiber intake, such as adding garbanzo beans to your salad or soup. Consumption of fruit skin and vegetables will also enhance your fiber intake and since fiber content of food we eat is low, it is advisable that one should increase the number of servings of fiber –filled food per day.

It can be difficult to get accustomed to food rich in fiber, as our cultural diet does not encourage it. However if you really want to lose weight, you’ll give fiber rich meals a try. Such food when combine with sensible eating can you lose weight. You might not be able to graduate to high fiber diet overnight. It may take some time of trial and error before you get the right amount of fiber .A high fiber diet can help you manage the amount of food you consume. It’s time to load up on fiber and watch your waistline reduce in size.
