Nigeria has rarely had a young president since she got her independence. It has always been elderly persons who are way above their fifties that have always assumed the seat of presidency in Nigeria. This is unlike what is obtainable in other countries where younger persons are given the opportunity to assume the position of a president. Barack Obama for instance assumed the position of presidency when he was in his forties. The resultant effect of having an elderly person as president is that, such a person comes into power with archaic ideas and notions of handling the country’s problems. Past experience has shown that elderly persons that served as presidents of Nigeria do not have the interest of the country in mind, because of the huge amount of public funds which they embezzled and save for their children and grandchildren.
Nigerians really need to give a younger person a chance to control the helm of affairs as the president because; A young president will be more enlightened on political and economic trends that will help move Nigeria forward. For instance, a young Nigeria president will know that running a crude oil dependent economy is not for the best, and would have thought of other ways to diversify the economy. Secondly, a young president will understand the plight of the masses better and thus will take policies that will favour the good of the masses; which includes building industries that will provide employment for thousands of jobless graduates.
