Why motorcycles are the most dangerous means of transport in Nigeria

Motorcycles are one of the most popular means of road transportation in Nigeria; in fact, there are Cyclists whose main source of income is to drive people around with their bikes for a fee; most people use motorcycles as their preferred means of transportation because to them, it is faster to use a motorcycles especially in an area where there is hold up. Let’s look at the negative side of motorcycle as a means of transport or rather, why motorcycles are dangerous means of transportation;

1. Weakest balance: A car has 4 tires which makes it well balanced on the ground; a motorcycle on its own has just 2 tires, which is not well balanced; that is why a motorcycle gets to crash at slightly collusion with another object and this is after it loses balance.

2. It doesn't offer fuller protection: A motorcycle has little or no protection for its riders apart from the few protection gadgets that are worn on the body which many riders ignore because of the heat. Any accident that occurs while riding a motorcycle, the rider is most likely to get badly hurt unlike if it were a car. A car has doors, windshield, bonnet, bumpers and air bags that protect the driver and other occupiers from serious injury when there is a car accident.

3. Reckless Drivers: before you get to drive a vehicle, you are expected to go through a driving school and obtain a driving license to ensure that you are fit enough to use the road; that is not the case with motorcycles; most of the cyclists we have in Nigeria did not undergo any form of training; and they still go ahead to make use the road; that is the major reason why incidents of bike accidents are higher than that of car accidents.
